About Aizawl

Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram stretched along a narrow ridge in the Lushai Hills, occupies one of India's most vertiginous cityscapes, and the moon rising over the deep valleys on either side of the ridge illuminates a town that seems to hang between earth and sky. Today's moonrise is at 19:57 and moonset at 05:40. From the Durtlang Hills north of the city the moon clears the eastern ridge and its light plunges into the Tlawng River valley below, picking out the white walls of churches that dot the hillsides and the tin roofs of houses stacked in improbable tiers down the steep slopes.

Reiek Heritage Village, perched on a mountaintop twenty-nine kilometres west, offers a traditional Mizo settlement where the full moon illuminates thatched longhouses and bamboo-walled granaries against a backdrop of cloud forest, the night sounds of cicadas and barking deer filling the silver-lit clearings. The Tam Dil, a natural lake in the hills east of the city, lies in a forest-encircled depression where the moon's reflection sits undisturbed on the dark water, ringed by the silhouettes of wild banana plants and tree ferns. During the dry season from November to March, the skies above Aizawl clear of the monsoon clouds that typically shroud the Lushai Hills for six months, and the exposed ridgetop position of the town allows the moon to be seen from horizon to horizon, its arc tracing a luminous path across the entire width of the Mizo landscape.

Knowing moonrise and moonset times helps the Mizo communities in scheduling Chapchar Kut and other traditional festivals that follow the lunar agricultural calendar, assists trekkers on the Phawngpui (Blue Mountain) trail in planning campsites for moonlit evenings at 2157 metres, and guides birdwatchers at the Murlen National Park in timing visits to observe the rare Mrs Hume's pheasant at dusk. Aizawl's ridgetop vantage transforms the moon from a distant object into an intimate presence, close enough on clear nights to cast the shadow of a church steeple across an entire hillside neighbourhood.
