About Gangtok
Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim draped along a steep ridge at 1650 metres, faces the eastern Himalayan giants including Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak, whose ice-clad summit catches the moonlight and glows like a pale lantern above the darkened valleys. Today's moonrise is at 20:24 and moonset at 05:47. From the MG Marg pedestrian promenade the moon appears above the forested ridge to the east, its light washing down the terraced hillside of the town and illuminating the golden roof of the Enchey Monastery perched on a spur above the city, while the Teesta River far below in the valley catches a faint, winding thread of silver.
Tsomgo Lake, a glacial pool at 3753 metres on the road to Nathu La, becomes one of the Himalayas' most magical moonlit scenes when the full moon reflects in its icy surface, the surrounding rhododendron-covered slopes dark and silent, and the thin air at altitude gives the moonlight a hard, crystalline brilliance that casts razor-sharp shadows across the scree. The Rumtek Monastery, the largest in Sikkim, sits on a facing hillside across the valley from Gangtok, and on clear nights the moon illuminates its traditional Tibetan architecture and colourful prayer flags while the chanting of evening prayers drifts across the moonlit gorge. During the pre-monsoon months of March to May, the atmosphere clears after winter and the entire Kangchenjunga massif becomes visible from Gangtok's viewpoints, its snowy ridges glowing with reflected moonlight in a display that local tradition holds to be a blessing from the mountain deity.
Tracking moonrise and moonset times helps trekkers on the Goechala trail time their pre-dawn starts to catch the moonset behind Kangchenjunga, assists monastery communities in observing lunar festivals such as Losar and Saga Dawa, and guides paragliders at Gangtok's launch sites in planning flights for dawn sessions under a setting moon. Gangtok's vertiginous terrain means the moon can appear to rise from below you if you stand on the right ridge, a reminder that in the mountains every shift in elevation offers a new perspective on the oldest light in the sky.
