About Kavaratti

Kavaratti, the administrative capital of the Lakshadweep archipelago, sits on a low coral atoll in the Arabian Sea surrounded by a turquoise lagoon so shallow and clear that the moon's reflection seems to rest on the white sand bottom rather than the water's surface. Today's moonrise is at 20:48 and moonset at 07:35. From the Kavaratti Beach the moon rises over the lagoon's eastern reef, its amber glow rapidly brightening to silver as it clears the moisture-laden horizon, and within minutes the entire lagoon becomes a luminous pool of moonlight, the coral heads visible below the surface as dark, branching silhouettes against the bright sandy floor.

The Ujra Mosque, the island's oldest and most revered, sits near the lagoon shore, and its whitewashed walls and ornamental ceiling of carved driftwood panels catch the moonlight through open doorways, creating an interior glow that spills out onto the sandy lanes. The uninhabited islands of the atoll, accessible by boat, offer beaches where sea turtles haul ashore on full-moon nights to nest, their dark forms moving across sand so white it appears self-luminous under the moon, and the surrounding reef crest breaks incoming swells into lines of phosphorescent foam that trace the atoll's outer edge in glowing arcs. During the fair-weather months of October to May, when the southwest monsoon retreats and the sea calms, the lagoon achieves a mirror-like stillness that makes the moon's reflection indistinguishable from the moon itself, and the Milky Way curves overhead in a display amplified by the total absence of light pollution.

Tracking moonrise and moonset times helps fishermen in their outrigger canoes time their departures through the reef passages with lunar tides, assists dive operators in scheduling night snorkel excursions when the moonlight illuminates the shallow reef in natural silver-blue tones, and guides islanders who follow the Islamic lunar calendar for daily prayers and festivals. Kavaratti's coral-atoll geography and pristine marine environment make the moon not just a visual spectacle but a practical guide, its light bright enough on clear nights to read by and its gravitational pull shaping the tides that define island life.
