About Leh

Leh, the capital of Ladakh set at 3500 metres in the rain shadow of the Greater Himalaya, occupies one of the highest and driest inhabited landscapes on earth, where the moon's light falls on a stark terrain of barren mountains, glacial rivers, and whitewashed Buddhist monasteries with an almost extraterrestrial clarity. Today's moonrise is at 21:30 and moonset at 06:11. From the ruins of Leh Palace, a nine-storey Tibetan-style structure perched above the old town, the moon rises over the Stok Range and immediately floods the Indus Valley with a cold, blue-white radiance, the mud-brick houses below catching the glow on their flat roofs while the Khardung La pass glimmers on the distant northern horizon.

Pangong Tso, the high-altitude lake straddling the Indian and Chinese border, becomes one of the world's most extraordinary moonlit landscapes when the full moon paints its 134-kilometre length in shifting shades of silver, cobalt, and steel, the water so clear and the air so thin that the reflection appears sharper than the sky itself. Thiksey Monastery, rising in tiered white-and-maroon storeys above the Indus floodplain, catches the moonlight on its whitewashed walls while the prayer flags strung from its rooftop flutter as dark silhouettes against the luminous sky. Ladakh's extreme aridity means cloud cover is rare outside the brief July-August monsoon pulse, and from September to June the moon transits a sky of such transparency that stars remain visible even near the lunar disc.

Knowing moonrise and moonset times helps trekkers on the Markha Valley trail plan camp locations for moonlit evenings above 4000 metres, assists astronomers at the Indian Astronomical Observatory at Hanle in scheduling observations around lunar interference, and guides motorcycle tourers on the Leh-Manali Highway in timing their passes through moonlit high-altitude desert. Leh's altitude strips the atmosphere to a fraction of its sea-level density, and the moon here appears larger, brighter, and more sharply defined than anywhere in lowland India, a spectacle that alone justifies the journey to this remote Himalayan capital.
