About Ranchi
Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand set on the Chota Nagpur Plateau at 650 metres, enjoys a moderate climate and a landscape of rocky hills, dense sal forests, and waterfalls that give the moon a varied and textured canvas across the seasons. Today's moonrise is at 20:26 and moonset at 06:12. From Tagore Hill, where the poet Rabindranath Tagore once stayed, the moon rises above the forested plateau to the east and its light spreads across the city's undulating terrain, catching the surface of Ranchi Lake in the town centre and turning it into a bright, oval mirror surrounded by the dark outlines of the Ranchi Hill and its Pahari Mandir temple.
Hundru Falls, where the Subarnarekha River plunges 98 metres over a rocky ledge thirty kilometres from the city, becomes a thundering curtain of moonlit mist on full-moon nights, the water catching the light as it falls and scattering it into a fine, luminous spray that hangs in the gorge below. Jonha Falls, another spectacular cascade nearby, is flanked by a Buddhist shrine whose whitewashed walls gleam against the dark basalt cliff face under the moon's glow. During the post-monsoon months of October and November, the plateau's streams and waterfalls are at their fullest, and the clear skies that follow the rains allow the moon to illuminate the red-earth landscape and the tribal villages of the Munda and Ho communities, whose traditional flat-roofed mud houses catch the moonlight on their ochre surfaces.
Tracking moonrise and moonset times helps trekkers at Netarhat, the Queen of Chota Nagpur, plan evening walks along the plateau rim for moonlit valley views, assists tribal communities who follow the lunar calendar for the Sarhul spring festival, and guides visitors to Betla National Park in timing jeep safaris when the moon aids in spotting elephants and gaur at forest waterholes. Ranchi's elevated plateau geography and relatively low light pollution give the moon an authority and brightness that make moonlit evenings here feel immersive, the silver light filling the valleys and forests with a glow that outlasts the city's early bedtime.
