About Shimla
Shimla, the former summer capital of British India, clings to a series of ridges and ravines in the western Himalayas at 2200 metres, where crisp mountain air and dark, forested slopes give the moon an intensity rarely experienced in the lowlands. Today's moonrise is at 21:22 and moonset at 06:23. From the Ridge, the open promenade at the heart of the town, the moon emerges above the deodar-covered slopes to the east, its light sweeping across the Christ Church spire and the Tudor-style facades of the Mall Road before cascading down the tiered hillside of tin-roofed houses that shimmer like stacked mirrors in the silver glow.
Jakhu Hill, crowned by the Hanuman Temple and its towering monkey god statue, rises above the town and offers a panoramic vantage where the full moon illuminates the snow-capped peaks of the Pir Panjal Range to the north, their glacial surfaces reflecting the moonlight as pale blue bands against the dark sky. The Glen, a forested ravine below the town, becomes a cathedral of shadow and light on moonlit nights, with shafts of silver penetrating the deodar canopy to dapple the fern-covered floor, and the distant sound of water from the hillside streams adding a liquid undertone to the visual spectacle. During winter, from December to February, fresh snowfall blankets Shimla's rooftops and the surrounding slopes, and the full moon transforms the town into a scene of almost painful beauty, every surface glittering with ice crystals that fragment the moonlight into diamond-bright sparks.
Tracking moonrise and moonset times helps trekkers on the Shimla-Kufri ridge trail plan their walks for moonlit sections, assists the toy train operators on the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla Railway in scheduling evening runs for passengers to enjoy the moonlit valley views, and guides photographers composing shots of the illuminated Viceregal Lodge against the night sky. Shimla's elevation and mountain-surrounded geography mean the moon appears closer and brighter here than in the plains below, a phenomenon that has drawn romantics and stargazers to these ridges for over a century.
